What the 2026 Instagram Study actually means for your brand

Everyone's talking about the algorithm. Here's what the data actually says...

Metricool just dropped their 2026 Instagram Study which analysed over 24 million posts from more than 375,000 accounts worldwide, and the findings should be reshaping how your brand shows up on the platform right now.

Here's what stood out to me:

✨Reels generated over 1,000 average interactions per post, more than four times the 237 average for single-image posts. If you're still defaulting to static imagery as your primary format, the data is telling you something

✨The one that surprised most people is carousels get saved 9x more often than single images, and their average view count is even slightly higher than reels. The platform is reshowing carousels to users who didn't swipe through the first time, meaning one post keeps collecting views across multiple sessions. That's organic longevity most brands are leaving on the table

✨Single-image posts, meanwhile, saw reach down nearly 22%, interactions down 25%, and engagement down 46% year on year. That format isn't dead, but it shouldn't be your default

✨One more that brands need to hear: posts that included at least one hashtag received 32% fewer views and 34% fewer interactions than posts without them. Instagram now indexes captions via keyword search. The words in your captions are doing more work than your hashtags ever did. So, hashtags are DEAD

The platform is more competitive, yes. But the data shows it's still rewarding brands that show up with the right formats and genuine consistency. The question is whether your strategy reflects that.
